Out of all the disturbing events happening in the state of Maharashtra, the oxygen leak episode in Nashik has shown like what it is to feel 'down in mouth'. "My mother was kept on waiting. Is this some kinda hotel? What right does the hospital have to keep patients on waiting for oxygen", cried about a 22 year old girl who lost her mother due to oxygen leak in Nashik today.

 

22 COVID-19 patients died in Maharashtra's Nashik after an oxygen tanker leaked outside a hospital, disrupting supply to patients for around 30 minutes. "As per current information, 22 people have died due to the interrupted supply of oxygen at the Zakir Hussain municipal hospital," district collector Suraj Mandhare confirmed.

 

 

In a video shared by TV9 Marathi today, the 22 year old girl was seen making everybody around feel the pain of her irreplacable loss. "My mother was kept on waiting for 2 days. Her procedure for oxygen started 2 days after the moment she needed it. Later she had recovered but today the oxygen supply stopped for 30 minutes. My mother died palpitating off oxygen", she said adding that all the 11 patients of the ward died similarly.

All the victims were on ventilators and in need of constant oxygen supply. Zakir Hussain Hospital is a COVID-dedicated facility where around 150 patients were either oxygen-dependent or on ventilators. Visuals shared by the news agency showed gas leaking from the tanker outside the hospital and dense white fumes covering the area rapidly.

 

 

 

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope promised the government will look into the matter and conduct a thorough probe. "As per the information available with us, patients who were on ventilators at the hospital in Nashik have died. The leakage was spotted at the oxygen tank which was supplying oxygen to these patients. The interrupted supply could be linked to the deaths of the patients in the hospital. We will issue a statement later after the investigation is over," Tope said.

 

 

An official of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's office said that the victims' families will be compensated with ₹ 5 lakh each. A high level probe into the matter will be launched, the official added. This is third of a kind incident where the COVID-19 patients had to breath last coupling the disater. Earlier in Nagpur on April 9, fire in the COVID care centre had forced patients to breath last. Earlier to that in the month of March, a hospital in Bhandup was caught in fire.

 

 

While all these slated events are saddening, the happening today in Nashik is heart wrenching. My deepest condolences to families who have lost their loved ones. Now, the priority should be given to assist and shift patients to safest possible location. Truth will definitely come out after enquiry but immediate steps need to be taken to avoid such incidents in future.
